Linear A was used by the Minoan civilization on Bronze Age Crete centuries before the related Linear B script was adapted to write Mycenaean Greek. Linear B was famously deciphered by Michael Ventris in 1952, but Linear A encodes a still-unidentified language and remains undeciphered, leaving the day-to-day writings of one of Europe's earliest civilizations permanently out of reach.
