This flightless bird lays an egg a sixth of its own body weight
The kiwi lays the largest egg relative to its body size of any bird alive, sometimes close to 20% of the female's mass, roughly equivalent to a human giving birth to a six-year-old. It also smells its way through the world: its nostrils sit at the very tip of its long beak, unlike almost every other bird, giving it a sense of smell sharp enough to sniff out worms underground in total darkness.
