Surrounded by a single hornet, these honeybees cook it alive with their own body heat

When a giant hornet scout finds a Japanese honeybee hive, hundreds of bees swarm it in a tight ball and vibrate their flight muscles to raise the ball's core temperature to about 46°C, hot enough to kill the hornet. The bees also raise carbon dioxide levels inside the ball, which lets the bees themselves tolerate up to 50°C, widening the gap between what kills the hornet and what their own bodies can survive.
