A charity is running a 12-year experiment: what happens if you just give people cash?

Since 2016, the nonprofit GiveDirectly has been paying a basic income of about $0.75 a day to tens of thousands of people in rural Kenya, with no conditions on how it's spent, in the largest and longest-running universal basic income study ever run. Early results found recipients invested in businesses and didn't work meaningfully less than a comparison group.
