Philo Farnsworth conceived of scanning an image line by line with an electron beam as a teenager in Idaho, inspired by the parallel rows of a plowed field. In 1927, at 21, he transmitted the first fully electronic television image using his 'image dissector' tube, beating the mechanical TV systems rival inventors and corporations were racing to build.
