A planet-sized network of telescopes took the first-ever photo of a black hole's shadow

In April 2019, the Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration released an image of the supermassive black hole at the center of galaxy M87, 55 million light-years away, built by linking radio telescopes across the planet into one virtual dish the size of Earth. The glowing ring of light bending around a dark center matched Einstein's general relativity almost exactly.
