One philosopher explained the entire universe with two rival forces: love and strife
Empedocles proposed that everything is built from four eternal 'roots' — earth, water, air and fire — which combine and separate under two opposing cosmic forces he called Love and Strife. When Love dominates, elements blend into complex forms; when Strife dominates, they tear apart into pure isolation. The framework shaped Western ideas about matter for the next two thousand years.
