Dung beetles steer by the Milky Way to roll their ball in a straight line

African dung beetles roll their food ball away from a dung pile in the straightest possible line to escape competitors, and researchers found that on moonless nights they orient using the faint band of the Milky Way itself. It's the first animal ever shown to navigate by the galaxy rather than by individual stars.
