A desert ant counts its own steps to find its way home across a featureless desert

Saharan desert ants forage for hundreds of metres over sand with no landmarks, then walk straight back to a nest hole the width of a pencil. Researchers fitted ants with stilts or trimmed their legs after they left the nest: stilted ants overshot the nest, stumped ants undershot it — proving the ants count strides rather than measure distance.
