Churchland argued 'beliefs' and 'desires' may not exist at all

Churchland argued that folk psychology — our everyday talk of beliefs, desires and intentions — is a theory of the mind like any other, and possibly a false one, the way phlogiston or the four humours were false. If neuroscience never finds anything matching those categories, he said we should scrap the vocabulary entirely rather than just relocate it into the brain. Mental concepts themselves, not only dualism, were now up for elimination.

— Paul Churchland, Eliminative Materialism and the Propositional Attitudes — The Journal of Philosophy, vol. 78, no. 2, 1981
