44 countries met at a New Hampshire hotel and redesigned the world's money
In July 1944, delegates from 44 Allied nations gathered at Bretton Woods, New Hampshire, and pegged their currencies to the US dollar, which was itself pegged to gold. The system gave the world stable exchange rates for nearly three decades, until Nixon severed the dollar's gold link in 1971.
