One equation on a tombstone explains why time only runs one way
Ludwig Boltzmann showed entropy is just a count: the number of microscopic arrangements that produce the same large-scale state. Disordered states have vastly more possible arrangements than ordered ones, which is why systems drift toward disorder rather than away from it. His formula, S = k log W, is carved on his gravestone in Vienna.
