The Dow lost almost a quarter of its value in a single day, for no clear reason

On 19 October 1987, stock markets around the world crashed within hours of each other; the Dow Jones fell 22.6% in one session, still the largest one-day percentage drop in its history. Investigators later blamed automated 'portfolio insurance' selling programs that fed the panic — but no single news event explains a crash that size.
