Birds may be able to see Earth's magnetic field

European robins lose their magnetic sense under certain wavelengths of light, leading researchers Wolfgang and Roswitha Wiltschko to propose a light-dependent 'compass' built into the eye. The leading candidate molecule, cryptochrome, sits in retinal cells and may let migratory birds perceive magnetic field lines as a pattern overlaid on their normal vision.
