A gas leak at a pesticide plant in India killed thousands within hours

On the night of 2-3 December 1984, a Union Carbide pesticide plant in Bhopal leaked roughly 30 tonnes of toxic methyl isocyanate gas over a densely populated city. Official counts put the immediate death toll near 2,259, but Indian government estimates of total deaths since have run as high as 15,000, making it the worst industrial disaster on record.
