A blockaded city was kept alive for 11 months entirely by cargo planes

In June 1948, the Soviet Union cut off all road, rail and canal access to West Berlin, trying to force the Western Allies out. Instead, American and British aircraft flew in food, coal and supplies around the clock, eventually landing a plane every few minutes at the peak. The airlift carried 2.3 million tons of supplies over 11 months, until the Soviets reopened the borders in May 1949.
