The CIA trained 1,400 exiles to overthrow Castro. They surrendered within three days
In April 1961, a CIA-backed force of Cuban exiles landed at the Bay of Pigs expecting a popular uprising against Fidel Castro that never came, and promised US air support that was scaled back at the last minute. The badly planned invasion was crushed almost immediately, humiliating the newly inaugurated Kennedy administration and pushing Castro closer to the Soviet Union.
