History

A late-arriving army turned Napoleon's last battle into a rout

On 18 June 1815, Napoleon attacked the Duke of Wellington's army near the Belgian village of Waterloo, hoping to win before Prussian reinforcements arrived. Wellington's line held through the afternoon, and once Field Marshal Blücher's Prussian army reached the field by evening, Napoleon's forces collapsed. He abdicated four days later and never returned to power.
