An army camp dissolved into panic and gunfire overnight — before the enemy ever arrived
In September 1788, soldiers advancing at night got into a drunken dispute with cavalry over schnapps, someone shouted that Ottoman troops were attacking, and the panic cascaded through the dark camp. Military histories of the Austro-Turkish War have long repeated the story, though the exact casualty toll it's often quoted with is disputed by modern historians.
