For 67 years, the Pope didn't live in Rome at all

After French pressure culminated in the death of Pope Boniface VIII and a deadlocked conclave, Pope Clement V moved his court to Avignon in 1309 rather than Rome. Seven consecutive French popes, all under heavy French royal influence, ruled from Avignon until Gregory XI finally returned to Rome in 1377. Contemporaries nicknamed this period the papacy's 'Babylonian captivity,' and the chaos of relocating back to Rome helped trigger the even messier Western Schism the following year.
